Our Healthy Edge Tip this week is to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night.
A good night’s sleep improves your mood, memory, adds years to your life and curbs inflammation, which has been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and arthritis. You know what else good sleep does for us? Sleep increases creativity. There are literally dozens of benefits that come from getting a good night sleep. Here's a short list from healthfinder.gov:
- Get sick less often
- Reduce stress and improve your mood
- Think more clearly and do better in school and at work
- Get along better with people
- Make good decisions and avoid injuries (For example, sleepy drivers cause thousands of car crashes every year.)
Not getting enough rest can also sidetrack your efforts to lose or control your weight. Lack of sleep can negatively affect your insulin sensitivity levels and as a direct result, lead to fat storage. Sleep deprivation also negatively affects your body's prduction of Leptin and Ghrelin, again making it difficult to lose or maintain weight.
